A limousine is an abnormally long luxury car, traditionally black or white in color, and it is generally driven by a chauffeur. Not many people own limousines. A company commonly owns them and clients hire them for services.

In most cases, only limousine service and rental companies own limousines. Many people who use limousines for transportation don't own them; they are still leased out by a company for long or short term. Contacting a rental company to provide transportation on a very short-term basis reserves them. The most common requirements are for transportation to an airport, proms, and weddings.

Limousine services can be fairly routine. For example, these services will pick up important people such as politicians, business executives, or celebrities from the airport, typically for the purpose of transporting them to their hotel. Limousines are also commonly used for actors and their associates to arrive at awards shows.

More occasional examples of limousine use are events as weddings (traditionally carrying the bride to church), parties whereby partygoers arrive to bars or clubs, and funerals. White and black limousines are common colors, with white being used for weddings and parties and black being used for the latter example.

Limousines can also be, and are quite commonly, customized to the clients' desires. Although not very practical, limousines can be fitted with entertainment systems, disco lights, customized plates, and cases have been known whereby one has fitted a hot tub to the back of the vehicle. These designs truly personalize the owner's vehicle and definitely make a statement.
